US Gas Stations Guidance (after April 2013 merge)

The standard process for gas stations is already in the wiki, though it is scattered a bit and you just look for ‘petrol.’

This post was placed in the forum because at the initial start-up after the merge process is short-term and subject to change and just didn’t feel right to put into the wiki.

I would support having it in the Wiki anyway. We can start the page with the usual “This information is new as of April 13 and highly subject to change, so check back periodically” or something like that.

Not a big deal but it would be better if the phone number had a space after parenthesis, currently: “(973)623-5727”

I didn’e see it mentioned here (or in the other thread) sooo . . .

When I’m updating the address of the stations, either imported or not, the address field gets lost when editing the address. I mean, I type (or paste) the street address into the text box above phone number (and tab or press numberpad enter) then hit edit to change the city in the address shown at the bottom and hit apply. When I save it and select that gas station again the Address text box is empty. The address is in the box when I hit save, yet is not saved. This happens in both the release and beta editor, with and without any extensions enabled.

However, if I change the city via the Edit / Apply buttons before entering the street address then everything saves fine, even without tabbing or hitting enter in the address text box.

So, apparantly changing the address via the Edit button clears the address from the text box without actually clearing the text being displayed in the Address box. It’s a bit of a nuisance and I don’t know how many gas stations I added addresses to before I noticed that it was happening. Now I have to go back and check all of the gas stations that I’ve updated over the past few days.

I have seen that too Mike, I just haven’t got to dissect it as you have, I am just stating I have ran into that issue.

Seen the same too. If city and state field are already entered and I don’t edit them, address saves fine. Thought it was something I did wrong. I caught it early enough to go back and find the ones that didn’t go in.

Speaking of addresses, it was initially confusing that there were two address fields. I finally realized the first was only the street address and the second was the city and state. Why are they separated? Is it a database issue and the UI did not recognize they are related to the user?

I would recommend they wither appear together as in 100% of all other data entry application, or the first address should be called “Street” or something more specific to what part of the address. Otherwise we WILL have people putting the entire address “123 Main St, Somewhere, CA” on that line.

I edited Alan’s original post to note the difference in the two address lines in anticipation of moving that content directly into the Wiki, which I still propose we can do now and modify as we go.

Every landmark has a city/state/country. Gas stations are special and have extra fields. So, the layout in WME is likely due to having type-specific fields above and the common fields below.

OK. So there is a logical reason for it to appear illogical to the editor.

I still say one of the two changes mentioned would improve it.

Good question, and one we didn’t ask yet. We shall.

That address issue is a bugbear. I bet I re-did a hundred gas stations just today because of disappearing addresses. I didn’t even realize there was a bug until this afternoon. Grr.

I’ve actually been checking this thread occasionally, wondering if you guys would run into this problem. We’ve had much the same problem on INTL with gas station landmarks: if you try to fill in more than one piece of information “per save”, some of it goes missing.

In the end, I got into the habit of simply entering one piece of information, hitting TAB to leave the box, clicking off the station to de-select it, then hitting Save - then on to the next bit of information. That seems to work consistently.

The “de-selecting” action may be superfluous: TimBone’s highlighting script highlights the landmark red when not selected and changed, so that step just re-assures me that the edit I just made was effective. But after many, many losses of information I had typed, I found a sequence of actions that just worked and didn’t mess with it.

I found that after pasting in the address, clicking/selecting, somewhere else in the map editor is a must otherwise the address issue kicks in. Thankfully I saw that bug after a few edits.

It looks like “Unbranded” is a bad idea altogether.

When reporting gas prices, only the brand is listed, not the name:

This is fine for stations like Shell and Exxon, but when you’re trying to report the price at Danny & Clyde’s, it’s confusing.

If it displayed the names, as the map does, the list would say “Danny & Clyde’s” and “Clearview Shell”.

If no brand is selected, the station name will display instead. I saw a “DISCOUNT ZONE” earlier today.

Optimally, selecting “Unbranded” in the editor should have the same effect as leaving the brand blank, so that the name can show. In the meantime, the wiki and any editing guidelines should clearly state that “Unbranded” is not to be used.

Thank you for posting that, sketch. Guidelines or not I’m about to go an un-do all the Unbranded stations I did in my county because it’s horrible. I found a place in one town where I had three Unbranded stations show up, all with similar addresses. It would be impossible for the average user to know which is which.

Edit to add: And now I’m hungry for a gas station poboy, too.

I found a gas station today, 15.5km from the correct location. https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=6&lat=45.40528&lon=-122.76222 is where Waze has it (it’s a linked station) and the railroad segment I created points to the real location. The only similarities to the locations are both are on a road named “Colton.” But totally different cities.

So, should I move the existing/linked landmark? Or delete and re-create?

Move, you need to keep the OPIS ID information intact so the station will get 3rd Party Updates.

Darnit.

So, why do we care so much about the 3rd party linkage?

For the (incorrect, incomplete) Gas Prices they provide.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I was thinking.
