WME (Waze Map Editor) tool is the editing tool of Waze. Wazers using it are called editors. Editors are classified from Level 1 (L1-beginner) to Level 6 (L6 Global Champions). All editors are volunteers – they are not Waze staff.
Editing Levels (Ranks) in Waze
Promotion to levels 2 and 3 is automatic and linked to the number of (correct) editions made on the map. Promotion to L4 and higher is only granted after deliberation by the local community coordinators and the Waze Staff.
L1 can only edit local streets where they drove (they can’t edit primary streets or major roads). When the editor rises in levels, they get the right to edit more important roads. L2 and L3 can edit more important streets, but not the major roads.
From L4 (which is only granted by local coordinators and Waze Staff), editors can edit all roads within their editable area (the area where they physically drove in the last 90 days).
In addition to the level, L3 and above can be granted the role of Area Manager (AM), which gives them a well-defined editing area, independently of their driving history.
L4 and above can become Country Managers (CM), who have a whole country as an editable area.
One or more senior editors may be named “coordinator” by Waze Staff and will become the link between the local community and Waze HQ.
