Ad Ops Maps Staff - McDonalds

I’ve seen a few of these now where Ad Ops Maps Staff have added some nonsense addresses to McDonalds, e.g. this one here:
https://waze.com/en-GB/editor?env=row&lat=52.89686&lon=-1.47119&marker=true&s=31797018623&zoom=6&venues=234947089.-1945299798.3423115
A city called “Derbyshire” has been created, and the street name breaks all the rules. Also just corrected one in Thetford where the city name was Norfolk. Might be worth checking for these and repairing…

Yes, I’ve seen a number of these myself. It’s like Waze HQ are trying to create work for us…

Could always feed it back via the survey here: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=316632

Yes we’ve found 1,300+ location and demanded HQ revert all edits, which they haven’t. Instead we had to provide detailed comments on what we thought was wrong. Please correct all instances you find… which is pretty much all McDonald’s and M&S locations.

Having read this, thought I’d check around my area. Some of the McDonalds branches had been edited - in most cases changing the name to something almost (but not quite) correct, and making the address into something nonsensical (putting an entire address into the street name, putting a county name as the city name, or changing the county name to something which hasn’t existed since local authority reunification in Wales!).

Ad-ops-Map(7) have made a proper mess of all M&S, most McDonald’s & Aldi.

It seems M&S provided store location address’s for the ad campaign and Waze staff never checked its compatability before mass editing the map.

Errors including
City names added to place name,
all M&S are now catagorised as Supermarket Grocery, even if they are an M&S Food to Go, or clothing only,
Alt names of Marks & Spencer and extra Google links have been removed,
Adding M&S Supermarkets inside hospitals,
Addresses include house numbers & Suburbs in the Street Field,
Standard street abbreviations havn’t been used,
New cities of West Yorkshire, London & Greater London have been created,

The biggest problem I see is the creating of new, invalid, cities. Any editor L1 & above can now use them for new places or street names. It’s going to be a massive effort to remove them.

Have HQ responded about reversing the edits? I can see there being problems as it’s a paid for ad campaign…

As a side question, does anyone know how often the street names database is purged of unused entries?

They’ve even changed the details of the M&S Financial Services head office up the road from me on Chester Business Park - it had been reclassified as a supermarket and given an incorrect name (have now changed it back). I hope no-one pitched up there in the hope of getting themselves a prawn and mayonnaise sarnie for lunch…

On the subject of new city names - some interesting new ones have appeared locally around here too as a result of this balls-up.

Ughhh…I hadn’t noticed the M&S additions. Reverting the changes to McDonalds might have been achievable, but there are so many M&S cock ups I’ve given up.

All I can say is the UK Champs have expressed their displeasure at how this has been handled, but so far there has been no suggested of any reversion/correction. I have again asked Shira for an update on what is being done.

As for city purges, we have never really known. Anywhere from a couple of map tile updates to a few months, if there is a schedule at all.

Got a cracking one here at my local McDs -

So we’ve gone from the (correct) location of Hening Ave, Ipswich to Clenchwarton Rd, Kings Lynn.
Now let’s see how far away these two really are:

Incase you can’t see that - it’s 1 hour and 33 minutes.

Why they have to do mass edits instead of say generating a map issue that can be verified is beyond me

It’s made a right mess of the search results in the app as well, multiple results , differently named and different addresses for the same McDonalds.

What a mess :frowning:

Update: Waze have undone the changes they made, and have asked us to verify the locations
-> https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=318619

FYI: Ad-Ops-Map team have updated many ASDA locations, and I have provided some feedback to them and asked them to redo their edits.

We still have a lot of M&S venues that need adding or updating -> https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=318866

Uh oh… https://www.waze.com/en-GB/editor?env=row&lon=-1.20415&lat=52.61930&zoomLevel=18&venues=235143694.-1943595890.25161737

The 780 edits made by this Staff account i September were noted this morning and an email sent to our Community Manager highlighting the poor quality of the edits, again.

Please leave any venues mapped by this account for the time being and I will happily pass on any URs caused to HQ asking for them to deal with any mess they have caused.

They’re doing it again with Vauxhall Dealerships…
Some wonderful new street names and a new city called ‘A38’!

Well spotted. One of my local Vauxhall dealerships (in Oswestry) had had its street address changed to Pembroke Dock, 140 miles away in SW Wales.

Just had a look for more of this account’s work in my local area. Found about a dozen edits from the last couple of months - almost every one had incorrect or incomplete information, added a street name which was nonexistent or nonsensical, or added a place which was just plain wrong.

It’s very insulting and disrespectful of the amount of effort put in by local editors.

Hi everyone, we previously tried to get HQ to allow us to verify all future ad locations, however we failed to do this for 1000+ locations in a timely manner. The Champs have provided feedback, expressing our thoughts on the mapping quality, so we agreed with HQ to let them map the venues and then we could amend and review their work. It has also been suggested that one lucky guy (me) might provide some training to the Ads team…

If you come across any KFC, M&S, Vauxhall, or YourParkingSpace then please correct the issue and log your comments in the Ad ops places review GSheet;

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IcLaj4vIOZnPByOVSl35cu5_TZ2BgjapMCZpiwOtRgg/edit#gid=978953787

Please request access if you need to. I have made a start on KFC where I have used the Additional comments column and then highlighted the line orange or red depending on the mapping issues found.

The YourParkingSpace ones are maybe not as clear-cut as some of the other glaring anomalies. The ones I’ve spotted are car parks associated with Premier Inn locations, but some of them seem to also be available as paid parking for non-residents - even though their location is such that I can’t imagine why anyone would want to pay to park there! I guess it’s just Premier Inn’s parking management contractor applying the same criteria to every car park they manage?

And now they’ve just screwed up ASDA

Yep, just spotted some more edits to McDonalds as well
