What are the icons?

I have a feeling that this is a very basic question, but I can’t find the answer here. Apologies in advance.

What do the icons showing on the road in Waze represent. I had assumed that they were other Wazers. Lately my daughter has been doing more of the driving and for several reasons it looks like this can’t be true. I’ll be passing an icon when there’s not a car in sight, for instance.

What am I seeing?

The Wazer icons do recognize others on the road, but it is not in real time for privacy reasons. Seeing that Wazer on the road is showing you that someone else was there a few minutes ago.
