I do not understand what problem was being fixed by reverting these ESTABLISHED SR NAMES.
I have 10 minutes of video I’m happy to post if I have to try to prove? that the existing structure of naming was correct, but again, this is falling into the Waze territory where Established norms are having to be Defended, rather than the change being consensual.
The primary name should be what the Big Green Signs indicate, where people who are unfamiliar with the area can locate it. This is in line with the “least surprise” concept.
Edit: annoyingly the naming depends on the direction you’ve come from. So there appears to be a conflict of naming.
Edit2: on further inspection there seems to be more of the names you listed as opposed to the ones it was changed to. I agree with you in that it should not have been changed.
Hi, This is my point, that it should not have just ‘been changed’ on a whim.
Logic has to take some form here. This is a locked L3 Road in a Major Area. The old naming was in effect for at least 2-3 years.
If there was a recurring issue that required the whole segment (From Southport to Burleigh) to be renamed, then it most likely, would have been performed in the past.
There needs to be a moment of “STOP”, before edits are just made.
I do not disagree with the fact that there are some ‘older/legacy/GCC’ signage in this area, that will list the names of the AKAs; however this was considered when the naming was changed when the SR were created.
The occurrence of BERMUDA STREET in visible signage VS the occurrence of Southport Burleigh Road is heavily in favor of the convention that was in place prior to the 27 Jan edit.
Here is the view of the BGS at the intersection of Southport Burleigh Rd and Nerang Broadbeach Rd.
Once on Southport Burleigh Rd, you do not find any significant occurrence of Bermuda St. I do have video of the all the signage from the M1 Northbound exit to Southport Burleigh Rd, where you can clearly see the signage does not support Bermuda St as being the primary displayed name.
There is no obligation for a Local Council, to remove their signage for a road that is taken over by the State. This is why these legacy signs are still up. They are not ‘wrong’, but are just not as up to date as the State Route name that was given to the road when they State took responsibility for it.
Both URs have come through as a result of the delays in drives. Did you want me to unlock these for you to process the street name changes, or you prefer them to be actioned directly?
This is also an old topic that had extensive discussion in the past along this road. Southport/Burleigh Road or Bermuda St. At that time and after a lot of discussion, there was no clear verdict either way as on the main street, it would say Southport/Burleigh Rd, but the turn in streets would say the ‘local’ name of the road ie Bermuda St.
As reports were coming in for issues with the road, not connected with the naming of the road, and those reports were saying Bermuda St, or other local names up and down the road, I was in favour of the local name, but soon after this I bowed out of editing here full stop.
Apologies for resurrecting this thread but the issue has again been raised via UR. A summary of my replies are below.
1. Our official sources (Google Street View and QLD Globe) don’t seem to refer to Southport Burleigh Rd at all.
2. Street signs seem to stop referring to Southport Burleigh Rd north of the Nerang River (except one I found at Ashmore Rd).
3. Addresses along here don’t seem to use Southport Burleigh Rd.
4. Many of these address changes have been in place for 12 months.
I have reviewed everything available and come to the conclusion that the naming is correct as it is. It is not uncommon for a State Route (or even a highway) to use local names along its route (I can provide other examples if you would like).
This section of road (north of the Nerang River) is tricky because both names (Southport Burleigh Rd and local) are used in different places along its length (I did find some more signage). There is no real consistency however the majority of information supports the use of local names (have a look at businesses along this section).
TMR has also documented that Southport-Burleigh Rd is known by other names locally. So while the entire length is referred to as Southport-Burleigh Rd, individual sections continue to use their original names. Gold Coast City Council do not seem to use Southport-Burleigh Rd either.
There are a couple of places where signage could be confusing (it uses Southport Burleigh Rd) so I have updated these particular segments to help with navigation (the instructions should now hopefully match the signage).
